If you are applying for your first teaching job, it can be a bit of a guessing game when trying to figure out what the school is actually looking for. A lot of job ads use the words 'enthusiastic', 'innovative' or 'team player', but what does this actually mean?
At Aspire People, we speak to schools every day, so we have a good idea of what they actually want when they are hiring new teachers.
Someone who knows how to connect with children.
As obvious as it may sound, this is very important. Being able to talk to your students in a way that they understand is a really big thing that schools look for. There is no need to be overly strict or outgoing, you just need to be genuine. Explaining things clearly, planning engaging lessons and including all students really stands out. Schools look for approachable teachers that can connect with and understand their students.
Having resilience.
Teaching is definitely rewarding, but it is not always the easiest. You will of course have stressful days, last minute cover, and moments where technology will fail you right before your lesson. Schools already know this and they are not expecting perfection. They are looking for someone who stays calm and adapts in these situations, and someone who is optimistic and keeps a smile. If you can show a time that you have bounced back from a challenge, that will really stand out.
A love of learning.
Schools love teachers who love learning, not just their subject but in general. Whether its a new teaching idea, a bit of tech or just sharing tips with colleagues, being eager to learn more goes a long way. Of course they do not expect you to know everything, its mainly about being willing to keep improving. Students will pick up on this energy and it makes a big difference.
Being a team player.
You don't want to be the teacher that shuts themselves away in their classroom and does their own thing. Schools will run best when everyone helps eachother. Sharing ideas, covering duties, or swapping resources when someone needs a hand. If you come across as friendly and supportive, people will notice. Having a 'team player' attitude where you are willing get to stuck in is an attitude that head teachers really value.
Doing the basics properly.
Sometimes its the simple stuff that matters most. Being on time, staying organised and communicating well may sound boring but it is really important. Schools won't expect you to overly perfect, they just want people who care, plan well and think ahead.
Someone who genuinely cares.
At the heart of it all, schools are just looking for teachers who care about the kids as people and not just their grades. If you are the kind of teacher that notices when a student is having a rough day or gives a bit of extra help when needed, that speaks volumes. Teachers will spot this straight away.
Overall, schools are not looking for perfect people. They want the kind of teachers that care, who keep trying, and who bring a bit of heart and humour to their classroom. At Aspire People, we recruit talent for education and are here to either help you find the right school for you, or the right teacher for your school. We will support you every step of the way and ensure that your needs are always catered for. Teachers are shaping the future, so we know that finding the right fit for every school is important. Every child deserves the best chance to succeed! 💜
