Diwali is here... a time to light up our lives with joy, love, and positivity! Today we will look at how we can celebrate it in the classroom so that everyone feels included and has fun.
📚Start with a Story.
Every festival has a story and Diwali has some great ones. Tell your class about Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya or how Goddess Lakshmi brings luck and happiness. This can then be followed by asking your students if they have any stories about light, hope or kindness from their culture. This is a lovely way to learn from each other and see how different traditions share similar values.
💛Make it Colourful.
Diwali is all about bright colours and decorations. Here are some easy classroom ideas-
- Draw or colour Rangoli patterns using chalk or paper.
-Decorate paper diyas (lamps) or make lanterns from recycled materials
-Put up your artwork on the walls for a 'Festival of Lights' display.
🍰Share the Sweets.
Food is a very important part of Diwali. Laddos, barfi and jalebi are some foods that are eaten and celebrated in this week. If your schools allows, students could bring their favourite foods from home to share (or just talk about their favourite festive food). If not, you could still look up photos or recipes online and learn about them together.
🎇The Meaning of Light.
Ask your students what light means to them. You might hear answers like 'my family', 'my friends', or maybe even their favourite TV programme. This is a sweet and simple way to remind everyone that Diwali is really about spreading happiness and kindness.
🌎Include Everyone.
Not all students celebrate Diwali and that's okay! Invite everyone to share their favourite celebrations, maybe Christmas, Eid, Easter or New Year. Your classroom will turn into a mini world of festivals and smiles.
💜At the end of the day, Diwali is about light, love and togetherness. When your class celebrates with kindness, creativity and respect it will become a more positive and inclusive space!
