Autumn & Halloween in The Classroom: Ideas for October🍂

Published date: 2025/09

Your Paragraph Text (1)

Autumn is arguably one of the best seasons - foggy mornings, the ground covered in orange and red crisp leaves, cold but not too cold weather... what's not to love? Add in the excitement of Halloween at the end of the month. With it being the end of September and the start of October, we have a few ideas for how to bring some seasonal magic to your school lessons. 🍂

🍁An Autumn Walk with a Twist

Take your pupils outside to notice the changing season! Collect leaves, twigs or conkers and bring them back to class. Younger pupils could sort and classify what they have found. Older ones might write a description, sketch what they have collected, or measure and graph leaf and sizes. If you have got space, start an autumn display table for pupils to add to over the month.

🎃Pumpkin Maths & Science

Pumpkins are more than just decorations! In maths lessons, the students could weigh them, measure their circumference, estimate and count the seeds. Pupils can compare results or work out averages. In a Science lesson, students can investigate what makes the pumpkins float or sink, test how long they last once carved, or explore their life cycle from seed to harvest.

✍️Seasonal Writing Prompts

Give your pupils a chance to capture the atmosphere of October with short writing tasks.

-"The leaves crunched under my feet as..."

-"At the edge of the playground stood an orange tree..."

-"On Halloween night, the pumpkin began to..."

These can be some quick lesson warm ups, or maybe part of a longer project!

🍬Halloween Fun

-Create a Halloween quiz. Maybe on films, traditions, or just general knowledge.

-Try an art project like designing Halloween silhouettes for the classroom window.

-Create a 'mystery box' activity where pupils use touch and description to guess hidden objects. Add in some halloween items!

Whether its an educational lesson or just something fun for your students to let go and have a bit of fun, its always good to try and connect some lessons with the season around us. Make the most of this time of year and bring a bit of Autumn into the classroom!
