We are all guilty of pressing snooze a few more times than we should, or choosing what part of our morning routine we can sacrifice to let ourselves have an extra 10 minutes in bed because we think we need it, but this is actually setting us up to have a less productive day. A few changes to your morning routine will make you feel much more organised, positive and motivated for the day, and as a teacher, you absolutely need that extra push of motivation to keep you going.
Wake Up with Intention
Instead of hitting snooze three times, give yourself a gentle start. Try waking up 15 to 20 minutes earlier than absolutely necessary. This extra window helps you avoid rushing and brings a sense of calm to the morning.
Tip: Place your alarm across the room so you have to physically get up to turn it off. Also, change your alarm sound to something slightly more bearable that doesn't burst your eardrums, but still loud enough to wake you up.
Move around
It doesn’t need to be a full workout—just five to ten minutes of stretching, yoga, or even a quick walk can make a big difference. Movement wakes up your muscles, improves circulation, and clears away morning grogginess.
Nourish with Breakfast
Teaching requires energy. Start with a balanced breakfast that fuels your body: think oatmeal with fruit, eggs with veggies, or a smoothie. We know how tempting it is to have that full English, and that's absolutely fine if your body is craving it, but try and practise balance - your body and mind will thank you for it. If you’re a coffee or tea person, make it part of your ritual. Sitting for a mindful sip or two before the rush can feel like a small luxury.
A Moment for the Mind
Journaling may not be for everyone, and that's okay! But letting yourself think of a few positive thoughts for the day can make a massive change. Some teachers like to jot down three things they’re grateful for or set one intention for the day (“Today I will practice patience,” or “I will focus on connecting with students”). Those morning affirmations go a long way!
Pack with Purpose
Instead of scrambling for your keys, lunch, or student papers at the last second, keep a area near the door where everything you need is ready the night before. In the morning, just grab and go. This will prevent any last minute delays which can make your day start wrong.
Commute Mindfully
Use your commute as a transition time. Listen to a favourite podcast, audiobook, or music playlist that uplifts you. This mental shift helps you arrive at school ready to give your best.
Taking the time to adjust your morning routine may feel like a chore at first, but after you implement them every day you will wonder how you ever spent your mornings differently! Mindfulness can completely change the way your days pan out and you can create an environment for your students that makes them feel motivated and excited to come to school. They will follow the example that you set - so make sure its a good one!
