We are currently seeking a compassionate and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to work with secondary-aged students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and autism, helping them achieve their academic, social, and personal potential.
Role Overview:
As a SEN Teaching Assistant at [School Name], you will be working closely with secondary-aged students with SEMH and autism. Your role will involve providing one-to-one and small group support to students both inside and outside the classroom. You will help to deliver tailored interventions, promote emotional and social development, and assist in managing classroom behavior, ensuring students feel supported, understood, and empowered to succeed. Working closely with teachers and other professionals, you will help to create an inclusive environment where every student can engage with their learning and build the skills they need for the future.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct support to secondary-aged students with SEMH and autism, helping them access the curriculum and engage in lessons.
Support students in managing their behavior and emotions, using positive reinforcement strategies and de-escalation techniques.
Work with teachers to implement personalized learning plans, tailored interventions, and specialized teaching strategies for students with SEMH and autism.
Assist in the development and delivery of social, emotional, and behavioral support programs.
Promote students' independence, confidence, and self-esteem, both academically and socially.
Monitor and record students' progress, behavior, and well-being, providing regular updates to teachers and the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator).
Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists, educational psychologists, and external agencies, to ensure a holistic approach to supporting students.
Ensure a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment that fosters respect, trust, and growth.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Experience working with students with SEMH and autism, ideally within a secondary school setting.
A genuine passion for supporting young people with additional needs and helping them succeed.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, teachers, and other professionals.
Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm and focused in challenging situations.
Knowledge of strategies for supporting students with SEMH and autism, including behavior management techniques and sensory support strategies.
A flexible, proactive approach and the ability to adapt to the individual needs of each student.
A relevant qualification (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification, or specific SEN training) is desirable but not essential.
