How To Become A Teacher

​So, you want to become a teacher? Our teachers think it’s a rewarding career and they love working in education! Perhaps you are a school leaver, completing a degree and want to move into teaching. Or perhaps you’re looking to retrain, and move careers into teaching and education. This is a speedy 2 minute read to help you create a plan on becoming a teacher.

Firstly, you will need to know what ITT stands for. You will see this mentioned a lot when you are doing your research in to different training routes. ITT is the abbreviation for Initial Teacher Training and is the umbrella of teacher training, in which different routes in to teaching sit.

What Do I Need to Have to Apply for an Initial Teacher Training Course?

1. GCSEs: At least a grade C in English and Maths GCSE grade C or equivalent in Science.

2. Degree:be relevant to the subject you want to teach.

3. ITT Course (Initial Teacher Training)

You can complete your teacher training either through a school, while employed at a school or through a higher education institution such as a university or college. In order to get onto these courses you will need relevant experience in your sector/subject:

Through a School –SCITT(School-led initial teacher training)

Employed at a school –School Director Teach First

Higher Education Institution –PGCEorB.ed (with QTS)

How Do I Build up My CV and Gain Teaching Experience?

You don’t need to put your career on hold whilst you are working towards your degree or after you have graduated you can gain teaching experience which will look great for your application.

You can work in a school as a cover supervisor where you will oversee lessons and supervisor pupils in class.
