stand out from the crowd

Supply Teaching Tips

There are thousands of agency candidates working in schools. Aspire People work hard to ensure that you stand out from the crowd. A large amount of this is down to your own actions once you secure an assignement.  If you can put yourself into a situation where the schools are asking for you by name you will get as much work as you need.

The following ideas will help you to get the most out of your assignment:

1. On your first day at any school you must show photographic identification (drivers license or passport), your CRB and your Aspire People ID badge.

2. Mobile Phones:

  • Under no circumstances should you use a mobile phone in a lesson, it must be turned off.

3. Dress Code:

  • Male teachers should wear shirt/tie/jacket/smart trousers/smart shoes
Female teachers should wear smart top or blouse/skirt or trousers/jacket/smart shoes
Follow the general rule – would I tell a pupil off if they were wearing the same as me?

4. Smoking, Alcohol and Drug Abuse:

  • Teachers are required to present themselves in a fit state to carry out their duties
  • Teachers must abide by the school's smoking policy
  • Any teacher consuming or being under the influence of alcohol or taking drugs (other than medical) on school premises will have committed gross misconduct and will no longer be suitable to work for Aspire People.

5. Time Keeping:

  • Teachers must arrive within good time to park and find reception
  • Lateness is not tolerated and can cause a lot of problems for the cover coordinator

6. During the Class:

  • Take the morning and afternoon register
  • Follow the lesson plan and make sure all work is completed
  • If there is no work set you must send for the cover co-ordinator and in the mean time give the pupils something constructive so you are not wasting time.
  • Make the lesson your own and actually teach them…a bored pupil is a naughty pupil!
  • Complete marking for the class (this mainly applies for Primary Schools)
  • Leave a hand over for every lesson
  • Leave the classroom tidy

7. Extra Duties:

  • Familiarise yourself with school policies
  • If covering for a form tutor, take the morning register
  • Provide support for break and lunch time

8. At the end of the day:

  • Make sure the pupils have left safely
  • If there is something you think the schools should know, speak to someone about it.
  • Allow time to say goodbye to the head or another member of staff

9. If you really want to go that extra-mile and make the most of your day:

  • Socialise in the staff room, you may just meet the head of department and get offered something long term!
  • If you have a free period perhaps ask if you can help out with another class or do some admin work?!
  • Thank the cover co-ordinator for your day and let them know you would love to come back!

“Without their support I would not be the Cover Supervisor I am today”

“When I first applied for Aspire People as a Cover Supervisor, I had very little experience of working in schools. My consultant made sure I was fully aware of how to safeguard both myself and the pupils. I was even asked to complete a scenario based questionnaire this not only helped to highlight gaps in my knowledge but taught me precisely how to deal with a range of classroom issues.”
